The European Union's new personal data protection law, GDPR, which comes into effect this Friday (25), has the power to affect the lives of all companies and users that have relations with the European bloc.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the European bloc's toughest response to the mass espionage carried out by the United States government, which shared information with other countries, such as the United Kingdom. Revealed in 2013 by Edward Snowden, a former CIA analyst, the scandal helped prompt a review of the law that had begun the previous year.
The largest set of online privacy protections ever malta number dataset since the beginning of the internet, the GDPR had its effects suspended since 2016, when it was approved, precisely so that companies could adapt to it.
11 main points of GDPR:
users can, in some situations, see, correct or even delete the information that companies store about them;
companies should only collect data necessary for their services to function;
collection and use of personal data can only be done with explicit consent;
any connected service must grant the 'right to be forgotten';
children's information is given special protection;
customers whose data has been hacked must be notified within 72 hours;
companies must communicate their data protection policy in understandable language;
Violators are punished with a heavy fine of €20 million or 4% of the company's global turnover.
European data may only be transferred to countries with data protection laws equivalent to those in Europe;
Companies that process data from Europeans must follow European law if they are in countries that are not considered “safe harbors”.
Large information processors have to keep records of every time they manipulate data.

Effects in Brazil
Even though it is aimed at Europeans and people of other nationalities living in Europe, the GDPR has the potential to impact internet users and technology companies all over the world. But that's not all. Any company that handles data can be impacted if it stores or receives information from Europeans. This includes everything from financial institutions to hotels and restaurants in tourist spots. Situations in which the effects of the GDPR will apply to Brazilians:
subsidiaries of European companies in Brazil that process data of European citizens and people residing in Europe;
Brazilian companies that make or have any transaction involving personal data with Europe;
Brazilian companies that have not made any transactions with Europe, but, at some point, processed data from Europeans, even on Brazilian soil.
The case of subsidiaries in Brazil of non-European companies but with a presence in Europe is a fourth situation in which Brazilians will see their relationship with connected companies governed by European terms, albeit indirectly.
