Google Shopping opens up to free product listings
Google has announced that it will bring free ads to the Shopping tab in the United States by the end of April and will expand globally by the end of the year. Previously, merchants had to pay for ad placement and product listings, which led to major online retailers dominating the Shopping tab.
Beginning next week, search results on the Google Shopping tab will consist primarily of free listings, helping merchants better connect with consumers, regardless of whether they advertise on Google. With hundreds of millions of shopping searches on Google every day, we know that many retailers have the items people need in stock and ready to ship, but are less discoverable online.
“Starting next week, search results on the Google Shopping tab will jamaica phone number data primarily of free listings, to help merchants better connect with consumers, regardless of whether they advertise on Google,” said Bill Ready, president of commerce at Google. “With hundreds of millions of shopping searches on Google every day, we know that many retailers have the items people need in stock and ready to ship, but are less readily available online.”

This change comes at a critical time when the retail industry has taken a significant hit due to shelter-in-place orders aimed at mitigating the spread of the coronavirus. Free listings make Google Shopping tab appearances more accessible for independent stores.
For retailers, this change means free exposure to millions of people who come to Google every day for their shopping needs. For shoppers, it means more products from more stores, discoverable through the Google Shopping tab. For advertisers, this means paid campaigns can now be augmented with free listings. If you're an existing user of Merchant Center and Shopping ads, you don't have to do anything to take advantage of the free listings, and for new users of Merchant Center, we'll continue working to streamline the onboarding process over the coming weeks and months.
“For retailers, this change means free exposure to the millions of people who come to Google every day for their shopping needs,” Ready said. “For shoppers, it means more products from more stores, discoverable through the Google Shopping tab.” Existing Merchant Center users will keep their ads for specific products as paid listings but will now also be able to list their entire inventory for free.
Google also announced a new partnership with PayPal that will simplify the onboarding process for merchants looking to connect their accounts. The announcement identified WooCommerce , Shopify , and BigCommerce as existing partners that offer platforms to help businesses sell online. In light of the current crisis, WooCommerce has stepped up its efforts to make e-commerce more accessible. The team recently hosted a free webinar on how to get started selling online and produced a guide to adding a store to an existing WordPress website .
While Google cites the coronavirus pandemic as a reason for moving forward with the company’s plans to make Shopping free for merchants who want to sell on Google, the move is a strategic step toward claw back the overwhelming amount of traffic it has lost to Amazon. If the Google Shopping tab can become a better source for comparing prices across a variety of stores, consumers may return to searching Google (rather than Amazon) first when they plan to make a purchase.
