Russian IPs on Blacklists: Why Emails Don't Reach Users

Post by Maksudasm »

If you use Russian email services, you may have already encountered problems with email delivery. The reason is that Russian IP addresses are massively blacklisted by the international Spamhaus service, and this will probably continue.

What happened?

Spamhaus is a service that fantuan database blocks spammers, helping mail providers filter unwanted emails. But now, probably due to the political situation, legitimate senders from Russia are also being blocked, regardless of the reputation of their IP addresses.

As a result:

Letters sent from Russian IPs are massively sent to spam on domains such as Outlook, Hotmail, iCloud, etc.

Some letters never reach their recipients at all - mail services block them at the sending stage.

What does this mean for business?

For Russian services, this creates additional complications due to sanctions and simply decisions by European and American services. Even legitimate mailings or transactional letters (for example, registration confirmations) may not reach users using email addresses on Microsoft and iCloud domains.

What to do?

We are aware of the scale of the problem and have already started searching for solutions. In the near future, we will prepare recommendations that will help minimize risks and maintain the effectiveness of email newsletters. One of the possible steps is to use a dedicated IP through specialized services, but it is important to properly configure its warm-up.

A dedicated IP within a mailing service is a unique IP address that is used only by one sender to send email newsletters. Unlike a shared IP address, which is shared between several senders, a dedicated IP is entirely owned by your account.

The main advantages of a dedicated IP:
1. Sender
Reputation Control IP reputation affects the deliverability of emails. With a dedicated IP, you don't risk that someone else's mistakes (such as sending spam) will affect your reputation.
2. Increased deliverability
If you follow the rules of sending and send quality emails, a dedicated IP helps to avoid your emails ending up in spam .
3. Flexibility
You control the volume of mailings and the frequency of sending, which allows you to adapt to the needs of your business.
4. Recommended for large mailing volumes
A dedicated IP is better suited for sending large volumes of emails (usually 100,000 emails per month), as it allows you to build a stable reputation.

Important aspects of working with a dedicated IP:
Warming up A new dedicated IP needs to be warmed up, that is, gradually increasing the volume of emails sent so that providers (Google, Yahoo, etc.) begin to trust this IP.

Compliance with the rules Sending spam or emails to outdated addresses can quickly damage your IP reputation.

Sending Volumes If your sending volume is low, a dedicated IP may not be effective as ISPs expect regular activity.

When do you need a dedicated IP?
You send a large volume of emails (100,000+ per month).
You want complete control over your sender reputation.
Your business requires high deliverability (e.g. online stores or services with mission-critical notifications).

For small mailing volumes, it is often sufficient to use a shared IP with a good reputation provided by your mailing service.
